I first got the urge to learn how to play guitar when I heard the opening riff to the Beatles song Day Tripper (and that wasn’t Yesterday!) I’m sure you have your own ‘wannabe’ guitar song too, the one that first inspired you to pick up a guitar. So I was going to be the next George Harrison. I borrowed a guitar and tried to pick out the riff, but of course it just sounded awful! Maybe this guitar thing wasn’t as easy as it looked… But I was hooked!

So I got myself a guitar… I got some friends to show me a few guitar chords… I got a “Guitar for Beginners” book… I got some guitar lessons… and eventually I did pick up the guitar riff to Day Tripper. But somehow I got discouraged. The guitar ended up sitting in the corner of the room.  Maybe I’d pick it up from time to time and strum the same few guitar songs and riffs. But I never really got any better at playing the guitar.

The crunch came when my girlfriend saw the guitar and, smiling, asked me,  “What can you play?” I mumbled something about being out of practice, and stumbled through a couple of tunes. “Very nice!” she said, but I could tell I was being damned with faint praise. She wasn’t impressed, and neither was I!

That day I realized that I really want to be able to play the guitar well. So I needed to make a plan and get a system, or else I’d never get any better. So I set aside my daily ‘guitar time’. I actually wrote it in my diary, and made an appointment with my guitar! Not the same time every day, but every week I’d set the times, and stick to them.

To teach yourself guitar, you need to learn how to play guitar chords. When I first picked up a guitar, I wanted to play along with my favourite songs. Straight away! I soon realized that I needed to learn guitar chords,  before I’d be able to strum along to any guitar songs. So I bought myself a book of guitar chords for beginners, worked out how to decipher the diagrams, and twisted my fingers into a G Chord.

My fingers hurt, and the noise coming out of the guitar sounded like somebody was trying to strangle the cat, but it was definitely a G Chord! Before too long, I’d added a few more simple chords to my G and I was playing ‘Free Bird’. OK, so I wasn’t quite ready for the solos yet, but I could happily bash out the rhythm guitar part.

If you want to teach yourself the guitar, you need to learn guitar notes, and you need to learn guitar chords. The most important guitar chords for beginners to learn are the open chords in each of the major keys. Once you teach yourself the guitar chords in the open position, you will be able to play along with many of your favourite songs.

As your confidence grows, you’ll learn how to play guitar chords that are more complex variations on the basic chords. You’ll learn chords in different positions on the guitar fretboard, and you’ll pick up the chord progressions that guitarists use in different styles of music such as blues, rock, country and jazz.
